“An individual who has invested their identity in a profession, who has found community, meaning and self-actualization in his or her workplace, is an identity crisis waiting to happen.” Totally agree and I wish I had thought about that when I was in my early career instead of after retirement. Where do I feel most myself is indeed a great question to ponder. Thank you!

You're not alone! Most of us don't think about it until it's upon us. Fortunately, there is still time to ponder and adjust if necessary. Thank you for reading, Yi!

Thanks, once again, for an incredibly thought-provoking discourse. Your words spark excitement and paradoxically ignite introspection. I have so many ideas I want to dissect! One thought is to compare the differences between man-made corporate communities and divine congregations against self-made identification. It would be fascinating to explore the concepts of diversity, homogeneity and individualism across the spectrum of affiliation and organizing. Am I making sense?

Yes, it make sense to me, Judi. Thoughts like these make me wish I had been a sociologist! Bible study has taught me a lot about human nature and how God wants us to live.

Judy, you've shared thoughts here that have made me think, as they always do. I know that my identity, like yours, is in being a child of God. Everything else I do springs from that. One of our sons works for a Big Tech firm, and you're right about them trying to meet nearly every aspect of an employee's life. He can eat in their cafe, exercise in their gym, visit their dental or health clinic - all without leaving the building! Thankfully he has also found a local faith community as well.

Maggie, I wonder if many workers in these environments realize the potential danger of investing their identity in a corporation. Clearly, the corporations feel it's in their monetary interest to provide all these services, which makes me a little (cynically) suspicious. It's so good that your son has a faith community. Thanks for reading, as always!
