I think "productive" is an overused (and sometimes misused) word, a "product" of our material world.

We *produce* most of the time, but what we produce and why we produce sometimes is overlooked.

I am still figuring out a lot of things about retirement, but this one thing is for sure: we no longer have to produce anything if it is not what we desire. We can now produce purposefully, out of intention and not necessity.

Very true, Yi. It's so encouraging to think of the wisdom, experience and skill that retired people have and the wonderful things they can produce when they are free to produce what they truly desire. Thanks for reading!

Judy, I recall listing as one of my second-half-of-life principles years ago that I wanted to be a producer, not a consumer. Yet as you've pointed out, it's not either/or. I love consuming good food and better yet, the content of well-written books and articles. We consume to be fed but also to continue to be productive. Thank you as always for this piece.
